Internship Facts

What Internships Should Do

An internship should be relevant to the student’s academic and professional goals
Employers should be open to the intern’s ideas and suggestions, as one of the greatest benefits interns provide is their fresh perspective on your business
Interns can fill your organization with energy, enthusiasm, and optimism, which can spark creativity and innovation in existing employees and projects
Employees should provide opportunities for growth and development through direct and ongoing feedback from supervisors
An intern’s supervisor should provide support in the form of interest, training, encouragement, and sometimes course correction to enable an intern to do their best work and to build confidence, teach new skills, and allow growth as a professional

What Internships Should Not Do

  • An internship is not an excuse to hire cheap part-time labor
  • Internships should be designed to be an educational work experience, errands and administrative tasks that are part of any job should be kept to a minimum (a good rule of thumb is that no more than 20 percent of time be spent on clerical duties
  • Interns should not expect their internship to be an easy “A”
